FIRST THINGS FIRST, THE ORPHANS!!!

WOW. I couldn’t wait to see my little kiddies at the orphanage. The excitement and overwhelming joy that God placed in my heart was unreal! We got on the train and I could hardly contain myself, then the taxi, then as we were walking down the road to the orphanage I saw my kiddies in the road playing ball. They saw us walking and they ran to us. My little Weilae came booking out of the orphanage with his arms wide open and the biggest smile on his face. I screamed WEILAEEEE as he jumped into my arms. It was truly a moment from heaven. It actually felt different and all the kids looked skinnier which I could not help but worry about. But after a few weeks things will start to get back to how I used to remember them.

TIA (THIS IS AFRICA)

I just wanted to send a note to let everyone know that I am alive and well, and settling in quite nicely in a forgotten corner of the world. I find it interesting when we talk about far off places, like China or Turkey, we refer to the name of a country, but when it comes to that big unknown place called "Africa" we often refer to it only by the name of its continent. So here I am in South Africa! A lot has changed, but many of the things have remained the same.

EMERGENCY STOP IN WEST AFRICA

It seems like a dream now that I am back here in this beautiful place I call home. I had a horrible time between flights to get here and almost missed every layover, but God made sure I arrived here safely minus an emergency stop in Decca, Senegal, (West Africa) because my plane ran out of fuel as we were going down over the Atlantic and a minor blackout in Johannesburg, South Africa. I was so tired, hungry and weak from 23 hours of traveling I passed out right on the luggage rack. Ten minutes later they got me up and of course my luggage was lost. TIA we say here (This Is Africa) around 9pm I finally arrived in Cape Town with the presence of God’s protection. Amen

HOW AM I DOING

The past week has been awesome but very crazy getting over a 23 hour jetlag, unbraiding my hair for three day straight (the amount of hair I lost is sick!!) and spending time catching up with my WONDERFUL flat mates (Christina, Molly, and Catharine). Life right now is crazy as you can imagine. Its overwhelming being back home because there are so many things to be done and so many people to see! I walk out of the flat, and on the streets I run into all of the locals who of course want to sit and chat for hours about my trip home, bless their hearts, but some afternoons when all I want to do is crawl back in bed and catch up on my rest it’s not so pleasant eh.

I am feeling great minus the stress of over 100 emails to respond to, literally! The price of internet went up so we are not going to get internet in our flat anymore which is a major shame, so we are praying God will provide somehow! I go to the internet café in our town which is painfully slow, so for now if you don’t hear from me right away, please know that I do love you and I will write back to you as soon as I can!!! And if you’re ever so kind to keep writing me emails, I do read them and I LOVE the encouragement and prayers, so keep em coming!! Just a hi, hello, this is what is going on with me is so encouraging to read and of course I love encouraging bible verses!

Thank you all so much for the support and also thank you for your patience as I am just getting settled in and figuring things out! My time home was such a blessing from God and the work I was able to do was unreal. I enjoyed speaking at dozens of churches and was very blessed to have the opportunity to speak at all of the local Christian High Schools, along with my former high school Forest Hills Central. Some of my old teachers started a HUGE fundraiser for me and the orphans which is AWESOME! The students have raised thousands and thousands of dollars and are even selling t-shirts to support my cause in Africa. God is amazing eh. My prayer is that I was able to encourage, inspire, and awaken others during the two months I spent back in the States! God blessed me with an amazing church I now call home. It’s right in Grand Rapids and its called New Life. I am exited to grow with them as my family away from home! Amen.

Working on adding to my website and updating it weekly is defiantly at the top of the list, along with keeping on track with emails and keeping you involved with the orphanage and ministries that I am involved in. My prayer is that you feel so involved in the work I am doing over here that you too experience the blessings and really feel the difference your donations or monthly sponsorships are making in the lives of the forgotten orphans of Africa.

THINGS TO PRAY FOR

I am applying for the Holy Given School with Iris Ministries in Maputo, Mozambique. I would leave in June for three months. Pray for conformation in my decision.

We had to rush my best friend Christina, who is a missionary as well, into the hospital on Saturday night. She was having back pain, nerve spasms, her arms and hands were paralyzed, extreme vomiting and diarrhea so bad we had to stop on the side of the road every half mile on the way to the hospital, she turned green and her body shut down. She has seizers and the pain is unbearable. Molly, Henk and I spent 6 hours with her hooked up to an IV before she came back to conscious. She will be flown to the States in two weeks for some testing and to se a specialist. Pray it’s not something she got here in Africa and that we do not get it, also for answers from the doctors and for God to cover her with his peace in this time.

I am still seeking monthly support and believe that God will provide as I continue to obey his call and live by faith. (It is about $500 a month for all of my personal expenses.) Please pray for faithful consistent support so I am able to continue to be the hands of God!

So there is a short update from the southern hemisphere. My apologies for the informality of a mass e-mail, but I must get going to see my babies!  I hope it is warming up a bit back home, and I'll be in touch soon!

Tonight as you go to bed thank the Lord you are not one of the 30,000,000 AIDS orphans in Africa tonight or one of the 55,000 Africans that died of hunger today, and tomorrow another 55,000 will die of hunger and then another 55,000 the next day and the next day. These are my brothers and sisters and these are the people God has called me to love. Be thankful and be blessed.

Love

Ali
